On June 4, 2026, Sylvia’s Children received their official recognition as a registered nonprofit in Uganda! The official name is Sylvia’s Children Healthcare Initiative and Education Foundation Limited which will allow us to continue operating under Sylvia’s Children! It is uncanny that it is on the exact date in 2003 (June 4) that we started our Sylvia’s Children journey and what an exciting one it has been! However, with the completion of the boy’s and girl’s lavatories at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School and the development of 10 businesses the school is now able to be self-sustaining.
For those of you who got our mailing last week you know that our next steps is to develop a model Ugandan clinic that, once operating, is based on the hub and spoke model and can be replicated in any third world country. We need to raise $500,000 so we can build this model and, like the school, make it self-sustaining. In Uganda they are lucky if the clinic can get 75% of their operating costs from patients with the deficit having to be paid through donations, grants, etc. Our plan is different.
Included in this newsletter is a site map showing what we are going to do. Our goal is to buy three acres, plant 500 coffee trees (yield spring and fall), have a well where villagers can purchase clean water and a cell phone charging station. There is a team of four Ugandans who have been instrumental in this planning and have come up with these ideas for generating revenue.
We will also have 30-person groups who will be self-insured, guaranteeing that ALL people will get good health care. In Uganda there is 1 doctor per 5,000 people! The mortality rate of children 5 and under is 5 to 6 times GREATER that the United States and the Maternity Mortality rate is 8 to 10 times GREATER!
This is a very exciting project that has the potential of changing health care in Uganda and other third world countries. Of course, we need your help! If you didn’t get the brochure with ALL the details send me a note with your mailing address and I will get it off in the post to you. You can also visit www.sylviaschildren.org … just bear with us as we get it all updated.
And, you can donate for any number of things. For example, bricks which are needed to build the clinic (see sample of what it will look like) are only ten cents each (of course we need 2,000,000); you can sponsor a tree – a room at the clinic – even name the clinic to forever memorialize a dear friend or family member.
Please join us in this project … we can make a difference, and you can be a part of it!
